Lessons learned: Integrating ASL into critical messaging
Description

Ensuring messaging is accessible to all Riverside County residents is an important goal of any county emergency response. Riverside County is has a large population of deaf or hard of hearing residents and is home to the California School for the Deaf – one of only two schools in the entire state. The county’s response throughout the pandemic included daily video updates, of which providing an American Sign Language interpretation was vital. Through important emergency planning, licensed ASL interpreters were present during our first news conferences. This need expanded to daily, livestream updates. As the pandemic evolved, different challenges were faced, including mask requirements and the need for social distancing. The county team worked with our ASL provider to leverage technology to allow translators to remain safely at home. There were many lessons learned when it came time to put the plan into action, including constantly rising to meet new and evolving safety guidance, as well as ASL best practices. There were similar lessons learned when it came to communicating to our Spanish speaking residents, which also included daily livestream updates and Spanish speakers during news conferences.
