Power of partnering with community-based organizations to engage communities that are hard to reach
Description

Going digital is great! But not everyone is there. Direct communications are foundational to our work as communicators. Combining the basics of direct mail and phone banking with community partnerships ensures messages will resonate with the communities we serve. Because community-based organizations, or CBOs, are trusted sources of information, partnering with them can improve our outreach and relationship with the community. In addition to boots on the ground, CBOs provide valuable feedback on tactics that best reach the communities they serve. Studies show Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities are disproportionately burdened by the effects of climate change as well as higher utility bills. By centering equity in their outreach plan, San José Clean Energy took meaningful steps toward increasing access to the benefits of clean energy. Learn how they partnered with CBOs to enroll low-income electricity customers living in disadvantaged communities in their Solar Access program. Teaser: 80% of applications were submitted via phone banking or direct mail and over 40% of enrolled customers speak Vietnamese or Spanish.
