Behavioral health storytelling is powerful, but it must be handled with care. This session explores the ethical dimensions of capturing and sharing multimedia content featuring individuals and communities in vulnerable stages of life. From unhoused populations to those navigating substance use disorders and intergenerational trauma, communicators must balance transparency, advocacy, and respect.Using real-world examples from our department’s work, we’ll discuss:· Trauma-informed approaches to media capture· Consent protocols and community trust-building· Ethical storytelling frameworks for internal and external use· Navigating cultural sensitivity in diverse communities· Lessons learned from campaigns that succeeded, and those that didn’tParticipants will leave with actionable tools to elevate their media practices while protecting the dignity of those they serve.
