Orange County Registrar of Voters: Navigating a U.S. DoJ Lawsuit, Allegations of Election Fraud, a Bomb Treat and Other Crises with Transparent Communications
Description

In the span of 12 months, the Orange County Registrar of Voters and Registrar Bob Page navigated public scrutiny from one of the largest cities in the county, a lawsuit from the U.S. Department of Justice, regional news stories that a woman registered her dog to vote and cast a ballot on the dog’s behalf, claims on social media that Registrar employees were triple-counting ballots, and – if all that were not enough – a bomb threat just days after the November 8, 2024 Presidential General Election. With the help of Molly Nichelson, Orange County Public Information Manager; her staff; the Orange County District Attorney; and the Orange County Board of Supervisors, Mr. Page led a carefully deployed public awareness campaign through media relations, social media, community outreach and meetings and more to properly inform the 1.9 million registered voters in the county (the sixth largest in the nation) that their ballots were safe and that the integrity of the election process remained secure. This session will cover how Mr. Page and Ms. Nichelson handled these communications challenges, clarified constant partisan misinformation, kept the county’s leaders/electeds informed and assured the county’s voters of the transparency and security of the election.
