From Curiosity to Confidence: A PIO’s Journey into AI, Privacy, and Ethical Innovation
Description

Artificial intelligence is no longer just for IT departments. It's reshaping how we serve the public, communicate with communities, and build trust. In this session, you'll hear directly from a public information officer who stepped into the world of AI and emerging technologies, learned to understand the tools shaping our work and the lives of the people we serve, and has a new mindset on what it means to be a public information officer in government today. Through a communicator’s lens, we’ll explore how to responsibly integrate AI into public service, from real-time translation and accessibility tools to data privacy protections and algorithm transparency. Learn how to ask the right questions to better prepare to share your agency’s innovative achievements with media, how to communicate technology to the public, and tap into resources used by over 900 government agencies worldwide through the GovAI Coalition. This session isn’t just about the technology. It’s about ethics, equity, and empowering PIOs to help lead the conversation.
