Messaging Mash-Up – Harnessing the Power of Partnerships to Broaden Your Reach
Description

When Governor Newsom declared a statewide drought emergency due to unprecedented dry conditions, Monte Vista Water District’s Community Affairs team knew it needed to find ways to capitalize the time and resources available to their small team of 2.5 staff members. New regulations and restrictions were rolling out at a rapid pace, pitting water districts and cities against each other with conflicting expectations for residents and businesses who were caught in the middle trying to comply with both agencies. Deeply rooted as a water-related issue, MVWD initiated a drought response team for a collaborative approach in responding to and engaging our mutual constituents about the drought, specifically combatting the challenges of getting accurate, verified information out from various agencies. The City of Montclair, Chino Basin Water Conservation District and the Montclair Chamber of Commerce mutually serve the same residents, businesses, and customers, all of whom looked to us for more information, answers to their questions, etc. Collectively, these agencies leveraged their resources (including staff, budgets and programs) while capitalizing on existing communications channels to broaden their messaging reach in a cost-effective manner.
