Learning Lab Part I: Emergency Video Lab: Using Video From the JIC/EOC During a Disaster
Description

During an ongoing disaster, such as a major fire, flood or earthquake, many agencies rely on periodic full-on livestreamed news conferences for their main (and often only) on-camera communications, typically a semi-circle of public officials and politicians. And relying only on that is a mistake, because they're missing out on the opportunity to actually connect with the community in an authentic, human way. Every JIC/EOC operation needs to have a PIO doing frequent live and/or fast-turnaround-recorded updates on social media and emergency web pages in between major news conferences so the organization can be seen as THE go-to source for timely, reliable information. In this fast-paced session, Kerry Shearer (The Livestream Expert and former Sacramento County Communications and Media Officer) will show PIOs exactly how to quickly set up a small studio at the JIC or EOC. He will show you the equipment you need, how to use it, and how to format and conduct your updates. He will show specific examples from a major California wildfire where he implemented this approach, and discuss why it was so effective.
