Make a big, tiny splash - A case study for standing out in a sea of resource tables with a mobile demonstration for sustainability initiatives.
Description

As government communicators, we have a responsibility to help support our agency’s duties to provide resources to the public, whether it’s for public health, safety, the environment and more. At Silicon Valley Clean Energy, we are faced with several challenges to getting information out to the community – we are a new public agency working to build name recognition, and we are communicating the complex topic of electrification (shifting away from fossil fuels to clean electricity). After years of working events to engage community members at events throughout our county to mainly have customers confused about what we do, grabbing swag and running away, we decided to make a significant investment in something big, but also small – at tiny home on wheels! Called the “Dream Home,” this mobile demonstration unit is a very attractive home (hello HGTV!) that people can walk into and is filled with electric appliances for which we also offer rebates. The Dream Home has drawn in hundreds of people who get to not only learn about our agency, but also see, touch and experience an all-electric home. If you find yourself facing the same struggles to get your complex messages into the community, we are excited to share the many lessons learned in this process. This new community outreach tool has had a high impact and given us valuable insights into what community members understand about electrification, as well as the misconceptions. This information has been invaluable as we continue to sharpen our messages that inform our local marketing efforts, but also for strategic regional policy support.
