Name
Listening to and engagement with residents who have been ignored or marginalized in our community’s past
Description
Using a case study about a city’s failures during a police-involved killing of a Black woman in her own home, these researchers will share results, insights, and strategies from three connected projects that focused on listening to and working with Black stakeholders. How might we all learn to listen better and grow more comfortable through engagement with residents who may have been marginalized or ignored throughout the history of our communities? Vulnerable residents deserve all the opportunities that our cities and counties have to offer, and this session will provide strategies about partnerships, new engagement activities, and listening strategies to bring them more fully and intentionally into our communication work. Insights will also be offered from a series of interviews with city managers and city communication directors about their perceptions of community listening.
