This interactive workshop will dive into the critical role social media plays in emergency communications, featuring real-world examples from Sonoma County. Participants will explore how public agencies across California are leveraging social platforms to deliver timely, accurate, and accessible information during crises, including wildfires, floods, heatwaves, and more. The session will begin with insights from Sonoma Water and County of Sonoma Communications staff, who will share their experiences and lessons learned from managing social media during recent Sonoma County natural disasters such as the Tubbs, Glass and Walbridge fires and recent floods. They will share a slide deck with photos and practical examples and resources. The second half will transition to an open roundtable discussion, where participants can exchange best practices and tackle pressing challenges, such as optimizing content for platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and WhatsApp, and deciding when to use video or live-streaming, and ensuring messages are accessible to those who need to be informed.
