In today’s complex communication landscape, government agencies are increasingly vulnerable to reputational risks and public scandals. Crisis communication has become a critical skill for PIOs and government communicators, especially in a time of heightened public scrutiny and declining trust in institutions. This panel will focus on crisis management techniques for government communicators, using the case study of a 2022 San Jose Fire Department scandal involving a video featuring a fire engine at an adult establishment and the 2024 Alameda County Fire Department member captured on video making racist remarks. The session will cover crisis response strategies and approaches, internal and external challenges, lessons learned, and actionable steps for preparing for future crises.
